Additive vs Subtractive web platforms
I was spending some time thinking about the web and how we interact with it, and I came to realize that running parallel to the concept of enshittification, a lot of web apps are some mix of additive and subtractive. Your RSS feed (you do still have one of these, right?) is purely additive, if you like content, you add it, you're not forced to see content past what you signed up for.
Platform such as Twitter, Bluesky, tumblr, et al that allow people to repost content easily and quickly suddenly add a layer where you can be shown stuff from sources you never signed up for. This means if you like an account, but it sometimes reposts stuff that you don't care for, most of these platforms have a way to block or minimize this type of content in the future.
I think any platform where I feel like I have to use tools subtractively to ensure that you get the content you want, something's fucked there. I only really want to see what I sign up for and nothing past that.
