It's almost the end of the year
Well it's almost 2026. There's been a lot since my last post. I bought a condo, I constructed so much damn furniture, and all the while the internet has gotten worse.
I know that I'm a hater, I've been one for ages and always will be. The major thing I've noticed this year is that in addition to straight up Generative "AI" slop infesting almost every platform at some level, things are getting worse. I have a new rule that the first time I see something on any given website and my reaction is thinking "man, I wish the person who posted this wasn't allowed to", I log off. The main result of this is that I just don't use the fucking computer as much, and I think that's generally good, but I wish this wasn't why.
The internet is in the abstract, the greatest thing we have created as a species. I'm not joking one bit here, the issue is the layer upon layer of brutal misery inducing capitalism that has been put on top of it all. There's no good reason for most YouTube videos to be thinly veiled ads, or every 3rd post on most social media to be ads. We're living in a world of unprecedented, unavoidable capitalism, and I think that is slowly but surely damaging our collective psyche.
So what am I doing now and what do I think we can do? I stopped going on most social media, and what I do still use, I removed any subscriptions, following, etc. If I want to see something I have to seek it out. Again, this often just results in me closing the fucking tab and not wasting my time. Just go out there and find things to do in reality, don't have piles of shit online, mute the notifications, self host your media, cancel the subscriptions, make more food, stop ordering door dash, buy shit in person, pay in cash, just unplug from the shit.
Remember to thank your Town Manager for a job well done!
